What Is Fue Hair Transplant? 8 Stages of the procedure explained.

During the past two decades, new techniques and improvements have occurred in hair transplants. Nowadays, hairs can be re-planted and follow the direction of the individual’s natural growth pattern via micro and mini graft techniques. So if you are wondering what is fue hair transplant, we have explained it in detail on this page.

The FUE technique involves harvesting healthy hair follicles from the scalp, and grafting them directly on to the bald and thinning areas of your head. Although the transplanting principle sounds the same as previous techniques, the FUE technique achieves a more natural look without leaving any visible scars. What is an FUE hair transplant and how does it work?

The Big Advantages Of The FUE Technique:

  • No linear scarring or stitches, allowing you to wear your hair short
  • Achieves a more natural look
  • Only the healthy and strong follicles are transplanted
  • Less pain and potentially no missed days of work
  • Initial healing takes only two to four days
  • Sport activities can be resumed after one week
  • The cost of hair transplant is even less than previous processes

Hair Transplant Timeline Explained

Before The Operation

We strongly advise our patients to follow the instructions below;

  • Do not take Aspirin, Vitamin B and E during the last 4 days before your operation.
  • Do not consume alcohol during the last 4 days before your operation.
  • Get a good night’s sleep the night before the operation.
  • Do not consume caffeinated drinks on the day of the surgery as well as the night before the surgery.
  • Your hair should be clean.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
  • Bring extra clothes.

Day Of The Operation

On the day of the hair transplant operation, all the details about the process will be explained to you before we start and your questions will be answered.

Our surgeon will examine your head and do the necessary preparation before the operation. You will be shown the area where the transplantation will occur. Pictures will be taken and your hair will be cut short in preparation for the operation. This process takes around 1 hour, depending on the questions asked. We recommend our patients to write down all their questions and ask at this stage.

Step 1 The roots of your hair at the back of your neck will be numbed with a local anesthetic to minimise the pain, so you will feel almost nothing during the operation. Most patients fall asleep during the hair transplant procedure.

Step 2 You will be sitting in a face-down position for the harvesting of healthy hair follicles and opening of the channels which is a preparation for the implantation phase. Using micro-motors with a diameter of 0.6 to 1mm., the healthy follicles will be collected and kept in the storage solution, Hypothermosol FRS. This process takes around 2 to 4 hours.

Step 3 Your hair follicles will be counted. During the counting, you will rest and have a lunch.

Step 4 The same number of channels as the number of hair follicles collected will be opened. This is the most important process of FUE hair transplanting and done by the surgeon solely. In this step, the natural look of your hair will be obtained. This process takes around 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.

Step 5 Your custom-made channel needles will be used for the FUE operation. Planting of your hair follicles into the opened channels. This process takes around 2 or 3 hours.

After Operation

  • Always wear a loose hat when going out as advised.
  • Continue taking your medicine as advised by the surgeon.
  • Try to abstain from heavy lifting work, contact sports and sexual intercourse.
  • Although you can continue your daily routine after just two days, please avoid direct sunlight for the first month following your operation.

Sometimes, you may notice small amounts of bleeding at the back of your neck just after the operation. This is expected and not unusual.

Post Operation: 1-10 Days

The first three days after the surgery, you can expect some mild swelling around the forehead area.

The patient also develops very small blood clots at the incision sites and these usually flake off in anywhere from five to seven days.

Any serious redness that has lingered after the surgery is usually gone by day seven and the recipient area is slightly pinkish for the next few weeks.

Additionally the scabs are expected to fall out during the 7th to 10th day.

Post Operation: 11-90 Days

Three weeks after your procedure you may begin to experience some shedding on transplanted hairs. This is completely normal and is to be expected as your hair switches to a temporary dormant phase called the Telogen phase, which all hair grafts go through after any hair restoration procedure. In this period, you may expect to temporarily lose 15% – 85% of your implanted hair.

Post Operation: 5-6 Months

After the falling out of the implanted slows down, the hair follicles will rest under your scalp during the Telogen phase.

Over the next several weeks, the patient can expect to see some new hair sprouting through the surface of the scalp. This new growth period varies from patient to patient but the average is three months. The new hair does not grow evenly but it will all grow in eventually. The new hair will be thin and fine, but will thicken over time.

During this time, the patient may also notice the formation of an acne-like condition in the recipient area. This is normal and means some of the new hairs are trying to grow through the scalp. Sometimes these can become temporarily trapped under the skin like an ingrown hair but the condition is temporary. This should be taken as a positive sign of new growth.

Post Operation: 8-10 Months

Between months eight and ten, the patient will notice the most impressive difference since the initial procedure.

The hair will be longer and much thicker and the overall appearance will be one of greater density than even a few short months before.

Post Operation: 12-24 Months

By the time a full year has passed since the procedure has taken place, the patient can hope to see the final result. However, improvements may still be seen well over a year after the surgery, especially over the crown region.

The time given here is an average. The hair that is now growing will continue to grow for the rest of the patient’s life and can be cut and styled in any manner the patient wishes.

There is no special regimen required to take care of the new hair. Standard shampoos and other hair products are perfectly safe.
